Prenatal Classes

Most first time parents take: Preparing for Childbirth, Breastfeeding, Newborns 101, and Infant CPR.

Preparing for Your Birth

  • Preparing for Childbirth

    Preparing for Childbirth

This comprehensive class covers everything you need to know to prepare for childbirth, including:

    • The final weeks of pregnancy
    • The birth process, including the different stages and phases of labor
    • Back labor
    • Labor support techniques
    • Basic breathing and relaxation for labor
    • Supportive technologies and induction
    • Cesarean birth
    • Postpartum recovery and the adjustment to parenthood

Parents are encouraged to register in the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, and have their classes completed by about 36 weeks. Please note that a hospital tour is not part of prenatal classes at Amma. You can contact your hospital directly for information about tours.

Preparing for Childbirth gives parents the fundamentals of intentional relaxation and breath work for coping with labor. If you desire a natural childbirth, or a more in-depth experience of hands-on skills, you will benefit from taking the Labor Skills Workshop in addition to this class. You can also consider Natural Childbirth.

This class can be taken in one full day, or over the course of three weeks. The curriculum in both options is exactly the same.

Tuition: $120 for any option. Tuition covers the expectant parent plus one support person.

We ask that families read our policies before registering for classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Private childbirth classes can often be arranged upon request for a tuition of $300 for a 3-hour session.

  • All-In-One Express

    All-In-One Express

Pressed for time? Our All-in-One Express class teaches you the basics of the birth process, infant feeding and basic newborn care – all in a one-day class.

This class highlights the essentials of each topic, but is not as comprehensive as our traditional classes.  We’ll spend the morning on childbirth preparation and the afternoon on breastfeeding and baby care.

    You’ll learn:

    • The birth process
    • Coping strategies for labor, including pain medication
    • Cesarean birth
    • Postpartum healing
    • Starting out at breastfeeding, and how to recognize signs of success
    • Newborn care procedures in the hospital
    • Signs of illness, and when to call the doctor
    • Giving a bath
    • Newborn care: diapering, swaddling and soothing, taking a temperature, and car seat basics
    • This class includes our online class, Breast Pump Basics, a $20 value (see instructions below)

Our instructor will recommend good websites and books for more in-depth learning. Because of the nature of the class, hands-on breathing and relaxation will not be covered. Parents wanting to learn and practice breath work and relaxation techniques should consider the Labor Skills Workshop.

In class you will receive the password to enter our Breast Pump Basics webinar. Enter here

This is one of our most in-demand classes. Keep in mind its popularity and consider registering early. Also, please note that a hospital tour is not part of prenatal classes at Amma. You can contact your hospital directly for information about tours.

Tuition: $195 for one 7-hour class (for one expectant parent plus one support person) and webinar.

We ask that families read our policies before registering for classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

  • Expecting Multiples

    Expecting Multiples

Parents of twins (or triplets) need extra preparation! Caring for multiple tiny babies at once brings its own special set of joys and challenges. Join other families of multiples as we walk you through childbirth, care and feeding, and adjusting to life as a family of four or more. Spending time with a small group of other expectant parents will let you graduate with a support network of people who know just what you’re going through. A visit from a new family with multiple babies will cap off our time together.

In this five-week series, families will learn:

    • The birth process, and how c-sections and vaginal births are modified for multiples
    • What to know about breastfeeding multiples, and how to ensure a plentiful milk supply from day one (includes information on pumping breast milk)
    • Feeding options
    • Newborn care procedures in the hospital, and care of premature babies
    • Basic care of your newborns, including bathing, diapering, swaddling, soothing, using a car seat and detecting illness
    • Self-care, sleep, and how to cope with the emotional challenges of multiple babies
    • Building your support community of playgroups, other parents, and online resources
    • A guest family of multiples will visit on the last night to share their experience

Tuition: $195 for the five week series (tuition covers one expectant parent plus one support person).

We strongly recommend this class be completed by 32 to 34 weeks of pregnancy.

This class includes our pumping webinar, Breast Pump Basics: Success strategies for using a pump and returning to work, a $20 value. In class you will receive the password needed to access the webinar. (Enter here)

We ask that families read our policies before registering for classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Private childbirth classes can be often be arranged upon request for a tuition of $300 for a 3-hour session. If you are on bed rest with your multiples, consider our Preparing for Childbirth Online. It is not specific to multiples but has excellent information.

  • Natural Childbirth

    Natural Childbirth

Natural Childbirth is the prenatal class best suited to women who are motivated to avoid or reduce the use of medications and interventions.  This class was developed by Sara Pearce, a midwife with years of experience supporting natural birth.

The birth process is the foundation of the class, and each week you’ll practice coping strategies like breathing, intentional relaxation, visualization, massage, and helpful positions.  While this holistic approach makes it a good fit for women hoping for an unmedicated birth, pain medications and supportive interventions are discussed.  With less lecture and more interactive, hands-on learning, we will explore issues like keeping a positive attitude about your body’s abilities, advocating for yourself, informed decision making, exploring emotions, and how to prepare yourself for parenthood.

Spending time within a small group of other parents-to-be establishes a support network of other families who may become friends for life!  You’ll even have a visit from a Natural Childbirth graduate family with their baby.

    You’ll learn:

    • The complete birth process
    • Extensive coping strategies for comfort, with ample time to practice
    • Pain medication and supportive interventions
    • Cesarean birth
    • Decision making and how to advocate for yourself in a medical setting
    • Planning out a “wish list” with goals for your birth
    • Postpartum healing
    • The transition to parenthood, with breakout sessions for both mothers and support partners
    • Weekly take-aways such as journaling projects, relaxation exercises and positive affirmations
    • How to make a plan for your care team, both in the birth setting and at home with baby
    • The last night is our “Sneak Peek” night.  You’ll be visited by a new family to prepare you for what’s ahead.

We recommend taking this class with plenty of time before your due date to practice the techniques throughout the third trimester.  Please budget time to finish the class by about 34-36 weeks.  As always, all families are welcome regardless of where their babies will be born.  For those families birthing in a hospital, please note that a tour is not part of prenatal classes at Amma. We encourage you to contact your hospital directly for information about tours.

Tuition: $195 for the six week series (tuition covers one expectant parent plus one support person).

We ask that families read our policies before registering for classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

  • Labor Skills Workshop

    Labor Skills Workshop

If you’re hoping for an unmedicated birth, or just want to further practice your coping strategies, this supplemental workshop is perfect for you. This is a great option for families expecting a second (or more) baby, who just want a refresher of skills.

This specialty workshop on coping with labor pain is all hands-on . We’ll practice:

    • Breathwork patterns designed for labor
    • Visualization
    • Intentional relaxation
    • Massage

Perfect for moms and labor partners wanting more practice or second-time moms looking for a refresher without the lecture component. Tuition: $50 for the 2.5-hr class (includes one expectant parent and one support person).

We ask that families read our policies before registering for classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
